Lexus Boring? Not Anymore
At Lexus of Highland Park, we’re not sure what most people think of when they think of a Lexus. For us, we think of top of the line, luxury. That’s why it was kind of surprising to find out that some of the general public think the Lexus brand is boring. Not sure what they’re used to driving, but that doesn’t really matter to Akio Toyoda, CEO at Lexus parent company Toyota Motor Corporation. He thinks the brand could be bumped up a notch, and so it shall be done. How that will happen, exactly, is where it gets interesting.
Lexus competes with some pretty big players in the luxury sedan segment — brands such as Audi, BMW, and Mercedes pop into mind — but with an announcement this January at the Detroit Auto Show, Toyoda made his intentions crystal clear. The latest salvo in the battle to win over the racing hearts of the American car buyer is the LC 500 coupe which will be the new flagship model for Lexus.
Sure, crossovers are currently the popular choice among much of the populace, and fuel efficiency is certainly on the minds of environmentally conscious buyers, but Lexus is banking on the fact that for many people a big and bold sedan still holds powers of seduction. The LC 500 should be on the lots of American car dealerships in early 2017, and you can bet that means us to.
The V-8 engine is old school by almost anyone’s standards, but the LC 500 relies on an all new rear wheel drive platform to help the 5.0 liter engine deliver 467 horsepower that gets the sedan up to 60 miles per hour in just 4.5 seconds. If you’re bored with the angles of the sheet metal body, the meshed grille or the carbon fiber steel, then we can’t help you. We’ll never get bored with the leather and faux suede interior.
