Lexus Invokes Holiday Nostalgia with Innovative December to Remember Commercials
A staple of automotive marketing during the winter months is year-end clearances and major mark downs to welcome in the next model year vehicle. For a while now, Lexus has produced their December to Remember holiday commercials with happy families welcoming new Lexus vehicles topped with an iconic, over-sized red holiday bow into their home.
For this year, Lexus continues the trend showcasing various models with large bows, but updated the story lines a little bit. In all three ads, excited parents are seen telling their kids fictitious scenarios about how their new cars arrived just in time for Christmas.
In the first commercial, “Christmas Train,” Lexus uses inspiration from the popular story “The Polar Express” and shows the delivery of a new Lexus IS F Sport sedan via train. While the fast moving train plows down the street and abruptly stops in front of a home, multiple Santa’s helpers are seen unloading the Lexus into the new owner’s driveway. As Christmas day comes, the owner explains how the elves went back home on the same train after the new Lexus was delivered.
The other two commercials include the “Magic Box” and “Teleporter.” In “Magic Box,” Santa himself drops of a small present that slowly transforms into a brand new Lexus ES330. However, in the other commercial, thanks to the use of a teleport, Santa’s helpers were able to zap a Lexus RX330 to its new owner.
Jason Stinsmuehlen, group director at Team One, the agency responsible for these ads, credits the new spots to the toys he received as a kid for inspiration. “I still remember getting bikes, Evil Knievel toys, Six Million Dollar Man dolls and so much more. What else, besides an awesome new car, could come close to that feeling now?” He added, “We’re illustrating that with Lexus, you’re never too old for toys.”
While the stories might have changed, the signature bow, which has been used since 1999, had to stay. “The bow is a Lexus holiday icon that people know without even seeing a Lexus logo. We’d never walk away from something that powerful,” Stinsmuehlen said.
