Lexus NX Soars in Crossover Popularity
The luxury crossover vehicle is hot. There’s no doubt about that. Maybe it’s the amount of room you can get in a crossover that you can’t get in a sedan. Or could it be the increased level of fuel economy a compact CUV offers over a traditional sports utility vehicle?
Perhaps, it’s the price. After all, well-branded vehicles like the 2015 Lexus NX, start somewhere around the $35,000 price range. A price that can’t be beat for a luxury automobile.
In fact, the number of registrations in the U.S. for sport utility vehicles and crossovers – a little more than 35 percent– has exceeded the number of registrations for sedans – a little less than 35 percent, according to IHS automotive.
If you want to break it down a little further – there are roughly 3 times the number of crossovers being sold as SUVs and minivans.
And as Tom Libby, IHS Automotive analyst puts it, “if the trend we have witnessed in the first two months continues for the remainder of 2014, it would mark the first time in recent memory – if not ever – that a car segment did not lead the industry.”
Two other factors that Lexus of Highland Park hasn’t ruled out are that automobile makers continue to introduce newer vehicles that utilize the latest technology and the fact that gas prices have remained below $4 a gallon.
Both are great incentives for a buyer in the market for a CUV.
What makes the CUV so unique is that it’s not really a car. It’s not a truck either. It’s somewhere in between.
Toyota Motor Company’s first crossover vehicle, the RAV 4, was constructed with the body of a car.
The design of vehicles similar to the Lexus NX is of the utmost importance because the automaker wants to maximize space. A smaller design makes for better handling, weight, and maneuverability.
It’s also very helpful when you’re trying to squeeze into those tight parking spaces, not to mention the fact that crossovers like the NX keep everything at a suitable level while driving.
Of course, there are tons of other reasons many drivers prefer CUVs, and with the sudden rise in popularity over the past few years, the global appeal of the NX crossover tells us at Lexus of Highland Park, that it’s sure to be around for quite some time.
