Northbrook Animal Shelter Reduces Fees for Adopt-A-Shelter-Cat Month
Northbrook, IL has reserved a special place for its growing population of adoptable cats. The Heartland Animal Shelter has pledged to find forever homes for more than 70 of its feline friends, while celebrating the Adopt-A-Shelter-Cat initiative this month.
Northbrook’s Heartland Animal Shelter has reduced its adoption fees for cats over five months old throughout the month of June, as a way to help increase the number of animals that find new homes.
Many of the shelter’s cats arrive requiring medical, emotional or behavioral care. Some even suffer from life-threatening conditions such as Feline Immunodeficiency Virus and Feline Leukemia.
Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) is one of the leading causes of chronic immunodeficiency in cats. Related to the HIV virus, FIV can be transmitted by cat bites or even from a mother to her unborn kittens. The feline immunodeficiency virus is the cause of a number of health complications such as upper respiratory infections, urinary tract infection, and cancer.
Feline Leukemia is a virus that is passed through saliva, blood, urine or feces and is responsible for the death of nearly 85 percent of all infected felines. When infected with the virus, many cats will experience enlarged lymph nodes, appetite and weight loss, and in some cases, sterility.
Because large numbers of cats suffer from the unfortunate effects of these and many other health conditions, Heartland conducts tests, does routine exams, deworming, spaying, and neutering when it receives it pets.
Each cat gets more than its share of special attention from the Heartland staff. They are cared for inside the shelter’s indoor cattery, where there are large bird-viewing windows, scratching posts, cat trees, and comfy feline beds.
In effort to find suitable homes, Heartland Animal Shelter has also reduced its adoption rates for the month of June. The fee for cats ages five months to nine years is $80; for cats older than 10 years, its $60.
The Northbrook shelter is a no-kill humane organization whose mission is to foster public education and understanding about the impact spaying and neutering can make on an increasing pet population.
Ultimately, Heartland’s goal is to not only find a forever home for their cats, but to also ensure that the matches made are the in the best interest of each individual pet.
