2016 News in Highland Park
So, 2016 has officially wrapped up and, wow, what a year it has been. Whether or not you fall into the category of 2016 being a good year or a bad year, you have to admit that it has definitely been an interesting time to be alive, to say the least. Nevertheless, Highland Park has certainly seen its fair share of interesting news throughout 2016, so we thought we would touch on some of the highlights.
The first bit of noteworthy news that happened in 2016 for the community is Nancy Rotering’s unsuccessful bid for the 10th District Congressional seat. Now, understand that the Highland Park mayor gave it a heck of a try, running quite a good campaign against Brad Schneider in the Democratic primary, but Schneider was able to squeak out a victory over Rotering. He would then go on to unseat Bob Dold in what was a very hard fought run.
Another noteworthy news item that happened to Highland Park in 2016 had to do with North Shore voters in School District 112 voting down a whopping $198 million bond issue with regard to a school referendum. The bond would have called for the building of an extremely large middle school that would work to serve the district as a whole.
In addition, 2016 marks the year that Highland Park became one of the first communities in the nation to adopt gender-neutral restroom signage in most (if not all) of its city buildings. This ruling comes in the wake of places like North Carolina, who have been in the proverbial hot water with regard to their transphobic stance when it comes to restroom signs. It is good to see a community such as Highland Park step up and be an example for the rest of the country.
Lastly, District 112 Superintendent Dr. Michael Bregy has accepted a new position in sunny Southern California, overseeing a school district whose former students include stars like Betty White and Carrie Fisher.
