Highland Park High School Senior Chosen for Presidential Scholars Program
Of course, it is quite an honor when you are recognized for all the hard work you put into something. Be it your job, your hobbies, your various skills, et cetera et cetera, garnering recognition from both your peers, as well as others, is a fundamental key to happiness that we all seek. Add to that desire the never-ending stress of being a teenager in high school, and you have yourself a recipe for quite a lot of anxiety. However, luckily for Highland Park High School senior Daniella Cohen, the stress of recognition can be deservedly lifted. To put it more clearly, Highland Park high school senior Daniella Cohen has recently been selected as a candidate for the United States Presidential Scholars program, a list that is quite exclusive—including less than 200 students from around the United States. That is to say, each year several thousand students are invited to apply for the United States Presidential Scholars Program, and from these applications only up to 161 graduating high school seniors are selected.
As per the Presidential Scholars Program’s statement of purpose from the official website of the United States Department of Education: “The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964, by executive order of the President, to recognize and honor some of our nation’s most distinguished graduating high school seniors. In 1979, the program was extended to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional talent in the visual, creative and performing arts. In 2015, the program was again extended to recognize students who demonstrate ability and accomplishment in career and technical education fields. Each year, up to 161 students are named as Presidential Scholars, one of the nation’s highest honors for high school students.”
Which, of course, is to say that Ms. Cohen joins a very exclusive club, one that she very much should be proud to be a member. Cohen, along with the other high school seniors that were chosen for the Presidential Scholars Program, will be recognized in June 2016 in an event to take place during the United States’ National Recognition Program in Washington, D.C. It should also be noted that Cohen will be joined by two other seniors, Jessica Chen and David Zhao, from Deerfield High School.
