Lexus to Build a Hydrogen Powered Car by 2020
It’s clear the auto industry is always advancing. From new safety features to the newest technology, the advancements are never-ending. Recently, Lexus showed off their hydrogen powered concept car in a North American debut at the Detroit Auto Show. The vehicle, currently referred as the LF-LC, is just a step towards Lexus’s current quest to have “a fuel cell car in the Lexus lineup around 2020.”
There currently isn’t too much detail regarding the LF-LC just yet, or its likelihood to eventually end up in production and out on the open road. However with the interest in moving towards the addition of a fuel cell vehicle by the year 2020, this is a very good start. While the company’s press release did give some information about the LF-LC, the actual data on how far the vehicle can go on just hydrogen has not been released just yet. Fuel cell technology is expected to become quite demanded in the coming years as an alternative source of fuel for vehicles. Fuel-cell electric vehicles will operate on much smaller and lighter systems, making the usefulness of the technology more applicable to larger vehicles like pickups and SUVs.
Toyota, the parent company to Lexus, has shown interest for over two decades; working to develop fuel cell technology. Here at Lexus of Highland Park, we are excited at the prospect of offering our customers a more fuel efficient vehicle, and Toyota customers may soon have the same chance. Toyota has stated their intent to have 3,000 of their fuel cell-powered car called the Mirai out on the open road by next year.
Toyota and Lexus could possibly have competition. Other makers like Audi are throwing their hat in the fuel cell technology ring with their recently debuted concept vehicle, the h-tron Quattro. At this time Audi is not rumored to be planning on releasing the h-tron Quattro which is powered solely by hydrogen.
