Getting to Know the 2018 Lexus RX L
One of Lexus’ best selling SUVs just got bigger and better. The RX series has a new addition to the family with the debut of the 2018 RX L in November. Now featuring three rows of seating, the RX grew 4.3 inches to accommodate third-row passengers and more cargo room in the RX L.
It’s what Lexus calls, “the mastery of vehicle packaging” because of their ability to keep “the sleek styling and easy maneuverability” all the while crafting a seven-seat version of their popular vehicle.
This highly-anticipated thee-row midsize SUV comes after a RX restyle in 2016 and delivers all the goods, from the luxurious interior and useful technology to the powerful engine, impeccable performance and supportive safety features. And with a starting price of $47,670 for front-wheel drive and $49,070 for all-wheel drive, it’s at the less expensive end of the three-row luxury SUV line-up.
Powerful and Pristine
Lexus has kept the same powertrains as previous models, which have proven to be more than just reliable. The RX 350L’s 3.5-liter V6 produces 290 horsepower and 263 pound-feet of torque, while the 450hL Hybrid with AWD uses the D4-S injection 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine and two high-torque electric drive motor-generators to deliver 308 horsepower. Both models feature the Drive Mode Select system, putting more control in the driver’s hands, with the options of choosing Normal, Eco and Sport (as well as EV for the 450hL Hybrid).
Spacious and Safe
The standard seven-seat RX L uses a 60/40 split bench-type seat, but there is also an available six-seat configuration with second-row captain’s chairs. The third row has a surprising amount of space, which was made possible by positioning the second row slightly higher.
With a maximum cargo space of 58.5 cubic feet—when all of the rear seats folded down—the RX L delivers plenty of space to get drivers where they need to go with everything they need. If rear passengers are coming along on the journey, there’s still 23 cubic feet of room to store goods with the third row seats down. When all the seats are occupied, the RX L has 7.45 cubic feet of cargo space in the rear.
With such a big vehicle, it’s important everyone is safe, which is why the new Lexus RX L has 10 SRS airbags—including full-length side curtain airbags that cover all three rows. For 2018, the whole RX line gets complimentary Enform Safety Connect and Enform Service Connect for the first 10 years. This, paired with the standard Lexus Safety System+—which features Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Pre-Collision System, Intelligent High Beams and a High-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control—ensures confidence and reassures safety.
Fashionable and Functional
The RX L doesn’t just play the part; it looks the part too, featuring standard leather upholstery and available interior enhancements that include matte linear dark mocha wood, espresso walnut and gray Sapele wood with aluminum. Even the standard Striated Black Trim features striking details, such as the glossy black three-dimensional embossed pattern.
Also standard is the eight-inch audio display screen along with HD Radio, voice recognition and Bluetooth, Scout GPS Link, a micro SD card slot, AUX mini jack, two USB ports and nine speakers. Upgrades to this system include the Luxury Package’s 12.3-inch high-resolution split-screen multimedia display and a premium 12-speaker audio system or the available 15-speaker Mark Levinson Premium Surround System.
With a tri-zone climate system, each set of passengers can relax in comfort. Not to mention the special features, such as the middle-row USB ports, which permit passengers to charge their phones and other devices.
